St Dunstan in the east was severely damaged in the blitz of 1941. Its wasn't rebuilt after the war, but in 1967 it was decided to turn the war ruins into of the church into a public garden. Whetton came across the church when he was exploring London soon after moving to the city, He was taken aback by how surreal and calm the garden was in amongst the fast and noisy bustle around it.
